Hylaform®
Hylaform has been FDA-approved as a dermal filler material and it is successful in the treatment of wrinkles and deep creases. Hylaform can also be helpful in lip enhancement and lip augmentation where it can improve the overall appearance of small or aging lips.
Hylaform consists of hyaluronic acid, a natural constituent of our skin. Hyaluronic acid attracts and binds water and therefore it maintains tone, pliability and volume of the skin. As we get older, the skin’s hyaluronic acid content decreases leading to a slow deterioration of texture and loss of volume. These characteristics make Hylaform a good choice for replenishing the skin of its lost hyaluronic acid.
Because it is a natural occurring molecule, skin testing is not necessary before the use of Hylaform. Artificial cross-linking of the hyaluronic acid molecules in Hylaform slows the otherwise rapid natural breakdown and absorption by the body and allows Hylaform to be present for several months after injection.
Hylaform is a clear gel-like substance and it is available in various concentration formulations allowing the plastic surgeon to tailor its use for the specific facial areas to be treated. Dr. Fechner performs the injection of Hylaform in the office (Worcester, Massachusetts) with a tiny needle after application of a special anesthetic cream to numb the skin.
The improvement after Hylaform injections is apparent right away and aside from a minimal and transient treatment response of the skin, there is usually no downtime. Hylaform may last 3 to 5 months depending on the patient’s characteristics and the specific region treated.
