Thinning hair and hair loss can start at any age, and many people are looking for ways to help restore the hair they once had. Achieving restoration to your hair can make you feel more attractive and confident.
Our commitment to advanced cosmetic technology can give you confidence that your hair loss is being managed by a leader in the field of plastic surgery. As a double-board certified plastic surgeon and educator, Dr. Fechner brings an impressive skillset to every procedure he performs.
Our team strives to commit to this high level of expertise with every procedure we perform. Beyond our knowledge and advanced techniques, we believe that a custom approach to hair loss will maximize results.
We offer the most innovative hair restoration services that have been proven to help encourage growth of new and thinning hairs.
Platelet-Rich Plasma Therapy (PRP) is a non-surgical procedure that is used in our office to help stimulate repair of weakened hair follicle cells to encourage growth and re-growth of stronger, thicker hair using healing properties in the blood.
This treatment is appropriate for both men and women of various ages who are experiencing hair thinning or loss. It is important to have an evaluation by on of our experienced practitioners to help determine if PRP is right for you.
We start by drawing your blood, just like at a routine physical. This blood is then spun down and separated in order to isolate the platelet-rich portion of the plasma. This part of the blood is full of nutrient-rich proteins and enzymes, but more importantly, it contains growth factors which become activated when introduced into the scalp and create a healing cascade for cell repair.
The PRP is carefully injected into the scalp in the area(s) of thinning/loss. Following the injections we perform micro-needling to the scalp to further stimulate the area.
We assure maximum comfort is achieved during the procedure by preparing the scalp with a local numbing anesthetic before the procedure. Other than some initial pinching during this numbing process, the procedure is virtually painless. There is very little, to no down time. It’s safe, natural, effective.
Patients come in to the office for a series of 3 treatments, done once a month. The procedure takes less than 1 hour and results can be seen in as little as 3-6 months.
A single follow-up treatment done every 6 -12 months will be needed to maintain results.
There are several surgical techniques to restore hair, but the most popular is follicular unit extraction, or FUE. We use this technique to offer a less invasive surgical approach that produces excellent results. Due to the intricate nature of and attention given to performing this procedure, we offer FUE as a means to treat scarred areas within the hair.
Many patients whom have had previous injury or surgery to their scalp area may be left with unsightly bald patches or thinned out areas within their hairline. Being a leading practice in the field of plastic surgery, we bring experience and an esthetic eye to treating these areas of loss.
We will start by preparing the back of your scalp. This is where they will remove the individual follicles, or follicular units, which become the donor grafts. This leaves only small dots in the area that are easily covered by your existing hair as the shaved area re-grows. We will then strategically map out the area into which we will place the grafts.
When the grafts are prepared the area that will be transplanted will be carefully cleaned and anesthetized. Tiny insertion sites will be created where the follicles will be placed with the utmost precision.
Depending on the size of the area, the procedure can take 2 or more hours, and your scalp may be tender afterwards. You will have to wear bandages for a day or two after the surgery, but most people can return to work within 2 – 5 days.
You may be prescribed pain medication and/or an antibiotic or anti-inflammatory for you to take for a few days.
Since hair is being transplanted, there is an immediate “apparent” improvement. However, the transplanted hair will fall out within 2 – 3 weeks after the procedure, with new growth starting within a few months. Most patients report seeing 60 percent of the new hair growth within 6 – 9 months.

On behalf of the entire team at Fechner MD Plastic Surgery & Medical Spa, we would like to take a moment to say thank you again for your loyalty and support during this unprecedented time. The past several months have been unlike anything we've ever experienced, and we're working hard to evolve so that we can continue to provide you with the patient experience you have come to expect from our practice.
Since the beginning of the COVID-19 worldwide pandemic, Fechner MD Plastic Surgery & Medical Spa has taken extreme precautionary measures, in addition to following the most up to date CDC recommendations and state guidelines to maximize the health and safety of our patients, staff and facility. Our surgical center and medical spa remain committed to providing the best patient care, and we are actively working to take all necessary precautions as we plan to safely re-open our practice. Please help us continue to protect the health and well-being of our patients and workplace by cooperating with all of our precautionary measures and protocols against COVID-19 at your next appointment, or as you plan for your surgery.
As a fully accredited surgical facility, Fechner MD has always observed the highest level of safety and sanitation. In fact, as a surgeon, Dr. Fechner is an expert in infection control. We want to ensure that we are doing everything possible for our patients to safely return for surgical and medical spa treatments alike.
The upgraded work flow and safety protocols we have implemented at Fechner MD far exceed those being recommended by any government agency.
Fechner MD will adhere to all local, state, and government mandates. We expect to cautiously resume medical spa and injectable treatments during Phase 2 of the Massachusetts phased reopening. We are awaiting a definitive date from Governor Baker. Cosmetic surgery is expected to resume during Phase 3 of Governor Baker’s plan. We ask for your patience and understanding as our staff is working diligently to reschedule all surgeries and procedures affected by our closure. Please understand that in order to open and adhere to Massachusetts guidelines, we will need to limit the number of staff and patients we have in our building and extend the time between patient appointments in order to sanitize rooms. This means we will have fewer available openings for procedures. In order to maximize our provider appointments, we will continue to hold consultations virtually rather than in person, with a few exceptions (body contouring, Instalift, vein treatments).
We thank you in advance for your patience throughout this time, and we look forward to seeing you here again as we begin to resume business operations. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Fechner MD Plastic Surgery & Medical Spa at (508) 754-4000 and our team will gladly assist you. Thank you!
