Liposonix® For Non-Invasive Fat Removal

Liposonix is ® a safe, non-surgical treatment for the reduction of unwanted fat. It is a revolutionary technology that uses high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) to treat areas of the body where you can pinch at least an inch of fat.

Even patients who are dedicated to a healthy diet and a vigorous exercise program can be left with unsightly fatty deposits that just won’t go away.

Dr. Fechner, as a double-board certified plastic surgeon, has assembled the most advanced systems for customized, precision body sculpting. The Liposonix system is one of the latest generation in non-surgical body contouring.

Treatments for Reducing Body Fat

Liposuction… SmartLipo®… VaserLipo®… These surgical procedures are effective, but many people do not want to undergo a more invasive procedure. Luckily, now there are non-invasive alternatives available – and they work! Liposonix is a non-surgical, outpatient treatment performed in our office. Liposonix is effective, and does not involve the recovery time associated with liposuction.

Liposonix: Targeted High-Intensity Ultrasound

Meet Liposonix and the power of ultrasound! The Liposonix treatment takes advantage of revolutionary “smart technology”: the gentle ultrasound waves travel through the upper layers of skin without affecting the tissues. It targets deeper fatty tissue layers, to melt and effectively destroy unwanted fat cells. Just like a lens that focuses sunlight, Liposonix precisely targets the fatty layer to reduce volume.

Tailored Body Sculpting with Liposonix

Have you tried dieting only to find that even if you lost weight, certain problem areas resisted all of your efforts? At the Fechner MD Medical Spa, the Liposonix procedure is offered as part of a highly effective, non-invasive body contouring program. Liposonix has been successfully performed on a range of body areas, including outer and inner thighs, back, and upper arms. The belly and love handles are most commonly treated – a procedure that requires only one hour to complete.

During the Liposonix treatment, fat cells are dissolved; the cell debris is then absorbed through the body’s natural metabolic processes over the following weeks. Since adults do not produce new fat cells, what has been shed cannot return.

What to Expect with a Liposonix Treatment

Your body areas will be marked out for treatment, and then the Liposonix unit applied to the skin. The focused high-intensity ultrasound dissolves the fat cells immediately, a process that most patients can feel as prickling, tingling or warmth. Treatment depth is about 1 cm (just short of ½ inch). The fat cell residues are then shed by the body over the following weeks to produce a thinner, trimmer, more attractive waistline. Most patients see the full results in about two to three months.

Does Liposonix work?

After studying the efficacy of Liposonix, a reduction of the waistline by about 1 inch (2.5 cm) in average was observed after just one treatment (1 inch is equal to one dress or pant size). After the 2 to 3 months, a more pleasing waistline appears. The exact outcome will depend on the specific treatment program and the individual’s body but averages at about a one-inch reduction. According to a clinical study, more than 90% of patients saw a leaner abdomen after a single Liposonix treatment.

Am I a candidate for Liposonix?

Good candidates for the Liposonix treatment are people who are seeking a modest fat reduction in problem areas such as the belly or love handles. This is not a treatment for obese patients, and is appropriate for those with a body mass index (BMI) of less than 30. The Liposonix treatment is most effective on patients who seek to remove smaller amounts of fat. If you are looking for significant and dramatic changes, surgical liposuction is a preferable treatment.

As with any cosmetic procedure, having realistic expectations is important: Liposonix is not a miracle cure; it is simply an effective non-surgical treatment for reducing the volume of unsightly fatty deposits. To be a candidate for a Liposonix treatment, you must be able to “pinch an inch” of fat; if you are leaner, this treatment is not appropriate. This treatment pairs well with CoolSculpting, Venus Legacy and Cellfina.

Liposonix: Frequently Asked Questions

Liposonix was recently approved by the FDA. Is it safe?

Before it received FDA approval in the US in January 2012, Liposonix was available in Europe and Canada for many years. In America, we benefit from the experience gained elsewhere: the Liposonix treatment available here is a more advanced, “second generation” technology with significant advancements in safety, comfort and efficacy. The second generation Liposonix procedure has been very safe with no major problems reported to date (June 2012).

What happens to the body fat that Liposonix has destroyed?

The ultrasound energy is bundled to provide a relatively high-powered beam 1.2 cm beneath the skin surface. This focused ultrasound leads to destruction of fat cells. Our body employs a repair process to get rid of this fat tissue. As a result, the layers of fat are thinned, a process that is complete two to three months after the Liposonix treatment.

Will the fat that has been treated return?

No, the fat cells that are removed through the Liposonix treatment will not come back! Because adults have a limited number of fat cells, whatever is gone will not regenerate. However, the remaining fat cells still can expand and contract depending on many factors such as diet, exercise, genetics, age and medications.

I heard that after liposuction surgery, fat accumulates in other areas. Is this true with Liposonix?

It is true that a significant portion of patients after liposuction gain fat in areas that were not surgically treated. This is usually associated with weight gain afterwards and could also happen after the Liposonix procedure. Therefore, it is important to understand that Liposonix is not a “free pass” to stop a healthy lifestyle. In fact, for many of our patients Liposonix has encouraged them to continue living thoughtfully and responsibly.

I heard that the Liposonix procedure is painful – is this true?

Virtually all of our patients tolerate the Liposonix treatment extremely well. Most patients experience various amounts of tingling, prickling, burning or cold sensations. Some areas are not sensitive at all; other treatment areas are painful in some patients. Because pain varies from patient to patient, we prepare our patients to expect some discomfort due to the destruction of fat cells and the generated heat. We employ specific distraction techniques that allow our patients to successfully complete the approximately 1 hour treatment.

Do I Have To Take Medications In Order To Undergo Liposonix?

No drugs are necessary before or after the Liposonix procedure. Commonly, we recommend some over the counter medications to patients before the treatment which allows them to tolerate the procedure even better. Afterwards, no antibiotics or pain medications are required.

I Have High Cholesterol Levels In My Blood. Will Liposonix Further Elevate This?

When the FDA reviewed all the available data for Liposonix, it did not find that the treatment had a negative effect on the patients’ lipid profile. Therefore Liposonix can be safely performed on people who struggle with elevated cholesterol levels.

Is Liposonix A Good Treatment For A Tiny Amount Of Excess Fat?

Because of the treatment depth of 1.2 cm, candidates for Liposonix must have a minimum of one inch (equals 2.54 cm) of “pinchable” fat. If you have less, then your fat layer will be rather thin and the programmed treatment depth will treat other tissues but not the fat. During your consultation, body areas will be examined and a customized plan established.

What Are Contraindications For Liposonix?

Women who are pregnant or lactating (i.e. breastfeeding) cannot undergo the Liposonix treatment. You must be 18 years of age or older. In addition, you cannot have an untreated hernia, skin infections or wounds in the treatment regions. As mentioned previously, if you have less than the minimum required amount of fat, the Liposonix treatment is not for you.

I Want To Lose Weight. What Should Come First: Liposonix Or Weight Loss?

When you are trimmer, your fat cells are more densely packed. A Liposonix treatment will be able to destroy more of these unwanted cells than if they are larger because of fat accumulation. Therefore, it is advisable to lose weight before your Liposonix procedure.

I Heard That The BMI Plays A Role When It Comes To Non-Surgical Fat Removal?

The Body Mass Index (BMI) is a value computed from the weight and height of a person. The BMI number delivers a good gauge of the amount of one’s body fat. Based on the BMI, the patient is placed in a specific weight category. A BMI of less than 30 is recommended for best results after the Liposonix procedure. People who do not meet this criterion have been successfully treated with Liposonix, yet it is important that every patient understands if s/he is an excellent or poor candidate for this non-invasive fat removal treatment.

I Heard That 1 Inch Of Waist Circumference Can Be Lost After Liposonix. Can You Guarantee This Result?

Studies demonstrated that on average, patients lost 1 inch in waist circumference. This means that some patients lost more, while others achieved less. Newer data indicate that most people, who are good candidates, lose at least one inch when stomach and flanks are treated with Liposonix. Regardless, one cannot guarantee this result; there are still patients who achieve less improvement despite excellence in treatment delivery.

If I Want To Obtain Additional Fat Removal, Can I Have A Second Liposonix Treatment Session? Will I Obtain Additional Fat Removal?

Usually, patients enjoy the improvements they achieve with Liposonix. Some patients therefore desire additional reduction of fat in the same region. This is possible with another Liposonix treatment. In order to fully determine the improvements from the first treatment, we do recommend delaying the second round of Liposonix for about 2 months. By that time, the second Liposonix procedure can be planned and customized for best added benefit.

I Had Body Liposuction In The Past. Can I Have The Liposonix Procedure?

Yes, the Liposonix treatment can be performed in patients who have undergone surgical liposuction (including SmartLipo and other laser or power assisted liposuction procedures such as Vaser Lipo). Areas of unevenness or remaining bulges can be improved with Liposonix.

How Long Should I Plan To Stay Out Of Work After Liposonix?

Liposonix is a non-surgical, no-downtime procedure for body fat reduction. Most of the “recovery” happens unnoticed to the patient; therefore there is no need to take time off. Most patients maintain a normal activity immediately afterwards. Some patients describe some mild soreness in the treated areas after the treatment which rarely limits one’s exercise regimen.

What Side Effects Can I Expect After Liposonix Treatment?

After your treatment, your skin may be pink. Mild bruising of the treated area can occur, sometimes only noticeable the next day. This may take a few days or longer to resolve. Some patients experience minor puffiness which can take days to subside. Mild achiness and tenderness are relatively common after the Liposonix treatment.

Which Areas Of The Body Can Be Treated With Liposonix?

The Liposonix treatment has been used in many areas of the body including the belly, love handles, inner and outer thighs, arms, back, and buttock. In the US, Liposonix has been FDA cleared for the abdomen and flanks (love handles). American clinicians have been using the Liposonix treatment safely and successfully in other body regions – a practice called “off label use”.
