The eyes are a focal point in an attractive, alluring face. Through the normal aging process, the eyelids are often the first region to begin to sag and droop. This is due to the development of saggy unsupported fatty tissue, creating bulging or a tired appearance, or puffy eyes.
The upper or lower eyelids can be affected either alone or both. These unfavorable features can be reversed with arguably the best blepharoplasty Boston has available performed by Dr. Fechner. Once performed successfully, can produce a far younger, fresher, rejuvenated facial appearance.
The most critical point behind a successful eyelid surgery – an outcome that is youthful, refreshed, and natural in appearance – is the experience and aesthetic eye of your plastic surgeon. Having performed thousands of blepharoplasties, Dr. Fechner is a highly-respected leader in the field of facial plastic surgery and educates others in this field at Harvard University. His experience is truly beyond the ordinary, extending to the field of facial reconstruction. When seeking a highly-skilled plastic surgeon who will customize your treatment, we invite you to find out more about Dr. Fechner and his reputation as an authority in facial cosmetic surgery.
After his careful examination in the office Dr. Fechner will decide with you which surgical technique for an eyelid lift procedure will be most appropriate. Our blepharoplasty in Worcester is one of Dr. Fechner’s favorite procedures because this delicate surgery, if planned appropriately and performed skillfully, can lead to dramatic enhancement for your other face features with a relatively quick and easy recovery. Dr. Fechner’s patients plan usually for a good week of recovery after an eyelid lift, and a blepharoplasty is safely performed in an outpatient setting.
Originating from the Greek word “blepharon” which means eyelid, blepharoplasty or eyelid lift is a surgical procedure designed to enhance your eyelids and bring a more youthful, bright, and awake appearance.
During our cosmetic blepharoplasty in Boston, precise amounts of fat and skin are modified and removed for improved eyelid symmetry, definition and to restore a fresh, youthful look to eyelids that started to droop and started to look puffy. The goal of a well-performed blepharoplasty is a natural look. The cosmetic eyelid lift may address the upper eyelids, the lower eyelids, or both, along with tightening of involved muscle structures.
Drooping eyelids represent an unfortunate sign of aging. The eye area is constantly exposed to the cold, heat, and wind, and other environmental factors. The skin around the eyes is the thinnest of our body and it loses the elastic, supple quality as the years pass, causing the upper eyelid skin to sag, with deep creases, lines, and hooding occurring. Dr. Fechner performs arguably the best eyelid lift Boston has to offer, which addresses these issues.
Dr. Fechner will also pay close attention to your eyebrow shape and position as it will have a direct influence on the upper lids. Upper eyelid surgery, when performed correctly, restores a youthful, fresh, natural look – not a wide-eyed, startled expression associated with a poorly-performed surgery that removed too much skin and tissue. Dr. Fechner is a highly-skilled plastic surgeon who is committed to helping his patients look younger and more vital – with a very natural appearance that inspires compliments.
Over time, the under-eye zone can become baggy and puffy as skin and tissue ages, leaving you looking worn and tired. In addition, the puffiness is commonly combined with hollowness underneath, a condition also known as tear trough deformity. When shadows cast into these deep depressions the dark circles are observed. For some patients, this aesthetic problem is passed down from earlier generations. If you are tired of looking tired, and seeing unsightly under-eye bags when you look in the mirror, it can be resolved with lower eyelid surgery. This is a delicate surgical procedure, requiring high-level skills.
Any error in the quantity of skin and tissue removed can not only lead to disappointing aesthetic outcome but may require reconstructive surgery for correction. It is imperative that the procedure is performed with great delicacy. Dr. Fechner is recognized for his surgical excellence in a range of facial procedures, including lower eyelid surgery. He stresses the importance of minimizing removal of fat; rather, he routinely utilizes advanced techniques where the fat from the bags is utilized as a natural filler to soften the tear trough depressions.
During your visit, Dr. Fechner will thoroughly examine your face and the unique characteristics of your features in both aesthetics and function. When focusing on restoring the region around the eyes, he customizes the procedure for each patient. Important aspects to consider are the position of your eyebrows, the extent of extra eyelid skin and fat, quality of lower eyelid skin and support of the lower eyelids themselves.
If he finds the support structures of the lower eyelids insufficient, a lid tightening procedure (a.k.a. canthoplasty or canthopexy) may be necessary. Also, existing eye conditions such as dry eyes and interference of the eyelids with your field of vision must be evaluated in planning the surgical technique to employ.
Our eyelid lift in Boston can be performed as a separate procedure or in combination with other cosmetic facial surgery such as a brow lift (either as part of our blepharoplasty in Boston or as a separate procedure), facelift or skin resurfacing procedure to achieve more balanced facial rejuvenation.
Before your procedure, you will receive specific instructions on preparing for your procedure, what to expect and how to care for your healing eyelids following surgery. We will carefully monitor your progress throughout the healing process.
The eyes represent the most prominent facial feature. Often called the “window to one’s soul,” a first impression will be influenced by the appearance of your eyes. It is the eyes themselves, the eyelids and their lashes, the brows and the animation of the eye region that reveals your emotions and personality.
Family traits, age and harmful sun exposure all contribute to loss of elasticity of the skin and tissue on eyelids and in the under-eye area. These changes lead to wrinkles, puffiness, bags, or heavy “festoons” of skin, often coupled with dark circles. These issues can leave even a younger person with an aged, tired or angry appearance.
With decreased skin elasticity and sagging of the midface, the supporting eyelid tissues and fat beneath the eye can slowly become more visible and unsightly, adding years to your appearance. The upper eyelid crease may become obscured with puffy, protruding skin and tissue. Eye makeup cannot hide this condition. In patients who have a larger amount of excess upper eyelid skin, the eyelashes may become sunken and almost invisible. Good candidates for blepharoplasty are both women and men who want to restore a more youthful, fresh, vital facial appearance.
Eyelid surgery will usually significantly improve these problems. Sometimes, additional treatments and procedures may be available for a more complete enhancement. For example, sagging of the eyebrows may contribute to or worsen the appearance of loose upper eyelid skin and a browlift may resolve the issue. Fine lines, wrinkles and crow’s feet can be improved by a skin resurfacing procedure such as laser skin resurfacing or a chemical peel.
Dr. Fechner routinely performs our eyelid lift in Worcester as an outpatient procedure in the office. Usually, relaxing medication is administered to help the patient feel relaxed and comfortable. Patients routinely sleep during the majority of the procedure. Deeper sedation may be used, but typically only when an eyelid lift is combined with other facial cosmetic procedures. Dr. Fechner prefers to avoid general anesthesia.
In some patients, a brow position that is too low contributes to the overall droopy appearance of the eyelids. In addition to the various brow lift techniques, Dr. Fechner performs a brow-release that can be achieved while performing the blepharoplasty. Dr. Fechner will determine a patient’s candidacy for this advanced internal brow lift during the personal consultation.
Initially, Dr. Fechner will carefully mark the location of the planned incisions and precisely measure the amount of skin removal. To maximize cosmetic healing and avoid visible scars, Dr. Fechner places the incisions in the most inconspicuous location. After the eyelid skin has been numbed, skin, muscle and fat will be removed, lifted and repositioned for the most pleasing and natural eyelid appearance. Using delicately performed surgical techniques, any bleeding is minimal. To assist further, tiny capillaries are sealed to limit bruising and swelling. All incisions are then carefully closed with tiny, mostly absorbable sutures.
Excess fat in the lower eyelid may be removed through a small incision beneath the eyelashes. Most commonly, Dr. Fechner will reposition this fat into the tear trough region to achieve a smooth transition from cheeks to lower lids. In addition, he removes a tiny amount of excess skin to produce a smoother, less wrinkled appearance. Most patients benefit from a conservative reduction of excess skin in this region. Alternatively, the incision can be placed through the inside lining of the eye in rare cases where extra skin does not affect appearance. A blepharoplasty procedure takes from one to two hours, depending upon the extent of the areas to be treated.
In some patients, Dr. Fechner applies advanced blepharoplasty techniques, where the lower eyelid fat is not removed but repositioned to fill the under-eye depression that is responsible for a hollow appearance and unsightly dark eye circles. Dr. Fechner will speak with you about the most effective method to improve your appearance, and whether a fat repositioning technique is appropriate in your case.
These procedures may be performed in conjunction with a traditional lower eyelid lift. Canthoplastic techniques are useful to maintain support of the lower eyelids to avoid the sagging associated with aging skin and tissue. If your lower eyelid droops, revealing the white of the eyes more than normal, or gives you an unattractive appearance, a canthoplasty may be used to correct this condition. It is usually reserved for patients with excessive laxity of the lower eyelid.
Eyelid resurfacing is a procedure designed to improve the skin appearance around the eyes. It may be helpful to improve fine lines and wrinkles as well as sun and age spots.
Dr. Fechner commonly performes laser resurfacing or chemical peels for the skin around the eyes. He will discuss the options for a resurfacing procedure and whether this treatment will enhance the results of your eyelid lift procedure.
Complications from cosmetic eyelid surgery are rare, and most patients are exceptionally happy with the outcome. Virtually all patients develop some degree of swelling and bruising. Possible but unlikely complications include: bleeding, delayed healing, infection, drooping of the upper or lower eyelid, asymmetry, double vision, dryness or irritation of the eyes and the potential for the need for further procedures.
Dr. Fechner ensures his patients are fully informed about what to expect, and has an extensive track record of thousands of successful eyelid surgeries that produce lovely, natural-looking results that heal quickly and as expected.
At completion of the procedure, cold compresses will be applied to your eyelids. You will continue these measures for the first few days to help minimize bruising and swelling. The area surrounding your eyes may appear puffy and slightly discolored for a few days following the surgery. You should keep your head elevated above the level of the heart in the early stages of healing. There will be minimal or no pain after eyelid surgery, although you will be prescribed pain medication to use if needed. Occasional eye irritation is controlled with the use of eye drops and gels. Initially, your eyes may fatigue more easily.
Most of the stitches used will dissolve over the first seven days. Remaining sutures are painlessly removed at this point. Average swelling and bruising may persist for up to ten days. Most women patients just wear makeup to conceal any remaining discoloration. Most patients can return to work and social activities within a week to ten days. Dr. Fechner recommends postponing strenuous exercise for fourteen days after the eyelid procedure.
The improvement achieved by cosmetic eyelid surgery is often significant and will last for many years, if not decades. Most patients describe that observers are aware of the improved look but are unable to determine what exactly is different about you – the perfect response. Although the aging process cannot be halted, after this surgery you will have far less chance of experiencing puffy fat pockets and excess skin as the years pass.
Although secondary procedures are possible to maintain the benefits, it is rarely needed. By correcting the problem areas around the eyes, you will achieve a more youthful, alert, and rested appearance with a cosmetic eyelid lift.
Blepharoplasty is one of the most successful procedures for rejuvenating the area around the eyes and enhancing your youthful glow. The recovery time for eyelid lift surgery is approximately one week to 10 days and eyelid surgery can be safely performed in an outpatient setting.
The surgery is performed in Worcester and patients frequently come to our luxurious, discreet, plastic surgery clinic from the Boston area, throughout Massachusetts and beyond.
